Basic Demographics

Studying the basic demographics of the Kensington/East Kensington neighborhoods in comparison to the demographics of the Fishtown and Olde Richmond sections of Kensington shows various ways in which Kensington seems to contain two different worlds.

Analysis: The Fishtown and Olde Richmond neighborhoods are homogenously white neighborhoods.  Kensington and East Kensington, however, are much more ethnically diverse.  Although they are predominantly white neighborhoods, they also have significant African American and Hispanic, particularly Puerto Rican, populations.

Analysis: The Fishtown and Olde Richmond neighborhoods’ most populated age bracket is the 25-34 year bracket.  Fishtown and Olde Richmond also have significantly lower percentages of youth than does Kensington and East Kensington.  Kensington and East Kensington’s poulations contain a wide variety of ages.

Analysis: Kensington and East Kensington have significantly higher percentages of households that are family households, households containing at least two people related by birth, marriage, or adoption than do the Fishtown and Olde Richmond neighborhoods.   In Kensington and East Kensington, about two-thirds of households are family households, while in Fishtown and Olde Richmond about half of households are family households. In Fishtown and Olde Richmond, about half of households are non-family households, with 35% of households as householders living alone and 15% as householders living with another housemate(s).  In Kensington and East Kensington, about 2/3 of homes as non-family houses.  Another striking feature is that in Kensington and East Kensington, about 34.7% of households belong to female householders without a husband, meaning a female living with either siblings or children but without a husband compared to 9.1% of households owned by a male with family but no wife present.  In Fishtown and Olde Richmond, only 14.8% of households are women householders living with either siblings or children but not with a husband.

Analysis: In Fishtown and Olde Richmond, the median household income is slightly less than the national average; in Kensington and East Kensington, however, the median household income when averaging together all census tracts is less than half the national average.

Analysis: In Fishtown and Olde Richmond, when comparing the average income to the poverty level, about 70% of citizens are “doing ok,” meaning that their incomes are around double the national poverty line.  In Kensington and East Kensington, however, only 30% are doing okay.  In Kensington and East Kensington, about 45% of the population are not just “poor or struggling” but are earning an income at or below the poverty line.

Summary:

To summarize, the Kensington and East Kensington sections of the Greater Kensington neighborhood are starkly different in terms of demographics to the neighborhing sections of Fishtown and Olde Richmond in the following ways:

  • Kensington and East Kensington have significantly higher population densities than do Fishtown and Olde Richmond.
  • Fishtown and Olde Richmond are homogenously white, while Kensington and East Kensington contain significant populations of Caucasians, African Americans, and Latinos.
  • Kensington’s and East Kensington’s populations have higher concentrations of youth than do Olde Richmond’s and Fishtown’s populations.
  • Most households in Kensington and East Kensington are family households, with a significant proportion of family households that contain female homeowners living with their siblings or children.  The split between family and non-family households in Fishtown and Olde Richmond is around 50-50.
  • The median income in Kensington/East Kensington is significantly below that in Fishtown, Olde Richmond, and the United States in general.  About 40% of Kensington/East Kensington’s populations live at or below the federal poverty line.  About 70% of citizens in Fishtown/Olde Richmond earn an income that is double or more of the poverty line.
